Michelle Ebert a.k.a. "Shell"Coordinator of Youth MinistryI grew up in the FRC, became a Sr. High leader after "graduating", and have had the privilege of working here since 2005! Working with the FRC youth keeps me on my toes to say the least. I am constantly inspired by these kids who are trying to make this world a better place. I love to eat sandwiches! I am perfectly imperfect. If you love middle school/high school kids and want to be an example of mature Christian faith in their lives or if you just wanna hang out and eat snacks- text/call @ 201-738-9054 or email @ youth@firstreformedchurch.com!

I have been a member of FRC since the mid-'70s and employed as Business Manger since 2001 and now the Director of Operations. I have a B. A. in Mathematics from St. John's University and a Masters from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Management. The Lord blessed me with the gift of numbers in whose presence I am completely at ease. I Love to fish and read. But my passion is my wife, Rosemaire, and our five children and six grandchildren. I have always been at my best when I am helping people.I can be reached most work days by calling the church office.

I’m Janet Chardavoyne, the Children’s Ministry Coordinator.I love children, animals, and the beach. I spend my weekdays working with special needs preschoolers - attempting to build a foundation and passion for learning so that they may grow to reach their fullest potential.I strive to present the Gospel to children in a fun, yet meaningful way with the hope that it will plant the seeds of faith for a lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ.I love VBS (our summer camp program) as much as the kids, if not more. At VBS, I get to witness God’s awesome love and power shining through 100+ children (and volunteers) as they shout out Bible points, sing and dance to hymns, and share their God sightings throughout the week. If you love God and children, enjoy making arks out of graham crackers, don’t mind the occasional potty parade, and have tons of patience, be sure to contact me about opportunities to serve in children’s ministry. We are always looking for new kids and families to join our programming.

Rebuilding of the Church in 1938Only one year after the church celebrated its 200th Anniversary, a fire started in the sanctuary and the building was engulfed in flames. Without adequate resources, the volunteer fire companies could not contain the blaze. The slate roof caved in. The bell tower, including the 1,200 pound bell, fell across the Turnpike. The community wept, then worshipped, then went out and began to raise funds to build a new church. Although only half of the $50,000 it cost to rebuild the sanctuary in 1938 was funded by insurance, the church members and greater Pequannock Township residents gave what they could. It was enough. Only 1 1/2 years after the church burned, a new sanctuary was built debt free. Watch this video of the raising of the recast bell.

At FRC, We Love Kids!If you have a child, infant to 5th Grade, tell them that we have created a fun, interactive program just for them. We want kids to see how God's word fits into their lives, to learn how to talk with him, and create great friendships that last. Come and see what we can offer your kids. Upcoming Sermon Series:"Real Faith: The Book of James"What we believe and what we do often differ. There is no benefit to our faith if we do not apply it to our lives. Yet, too often Christianity can become a one-hour on Sunday morning thing. It is easy to compartmentalize our faith from the rest of our lives. But, what would change if faith were incorporated into aspect of your life; every day, in every situation and circumstance, and in every relationship? As we walk into this New Year 2012 with the best of intentions to grow, come and join us for this study of the book of James.

FacilitiesFRC has been blessed with multi-use/multi-purpose spaces. At times, we rent to outside organzations who are, in some way, "helping people move forward." Located in the heart of our community, we have a heart for our community. We open our doors to organizations and groups, such as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, the Veterans, local sports teams, other churches who need more space, human services organizations who are working with the mentally ill, developmentally challenged, and at-risk families and youth. If you are interested in utlizing/renting space, please contact the church office at office@firstreformedchurch.com or (973) 835-1144 (x11).

BaptismsOn the third Sunday of each month, we perform the Sacrament of Baptism in our 10 a.m. worship service. Baptism is a statement of faith. When an infant is baptized, the parents faith stands in for the child's faith until they are old enough to confirm their own beliefs in Jesus Christ. Therefore, in order to have a baby baptized in FRC, we ask that the parent(s) either be an active member of our congregation or another church. Adults simply make a statement of their faith in Christ. Our denomination believes in one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. For more information on baptism or for an application, call Vicky in the church office at (973) 835-1144 x11.

Food Pantry at FRCThe Pequannock Township Food Pantry is a non- profit facility that was started by the clergy of the township and has been in existence for more than 50 years. It became more active following the 1984 flood. Currently it is one of the most successful missions of this church. The pantry benefits from collections of food from township organizations, churches, schools, and scouts along with donations from individuals. Many organizations and individuals choose to make monetary donations. The money is used to buy gift cards from Shop Rite as well as any items that may be out of stock in the pantry. Each client receives $40 in Shop Rite gift cards which enables them to buy itemslike milk, bread, eggs, produce and meat to supplement the non perishable items they receive at the pantry. For some families, this is their only source of groceries. As of February, The Pequannock Township Food Pantry is serving 50 families each month, and new referrals are always coming in. At this time, most needed items are coffee, tea, laundry detergent, dish detergent, canned fruit, meals in a can, juice, paper products and snacks. After the pantry is stocked, the items that are in surplus are sent to Newark to help clients there. Thank you for your generous donations and help.

I earned a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary, lived in the Netherlands on a graduate fellowship (thank you, Princeton), before moving to the radical and artistic Town of Woodstock, NY where I was the Pastor of Woodstock Reformed Church for nine years and grew to love all; the traditionalists and the counter-culturals.What you need to know about me is that: - I like to be outdoors doing anything active - running, skiing, hiking, golfing, gardening, etc.- I am a Type A, maniac, multi-tasker (yes, I'm a mom), and wear many hats. It is a messy life, but God somehow uses it.- I spent most of my childhood outside of organized religion.- Over 25 years ago, I came to believe in a radical, revolutionary Jesus, who came into the world to be "with us" and redefine how we understand God's purposes for the world; reaching out to people in the margins, the irreligious, the broken, the rejected; and empowering his followers to do the same. - I am passionate about human rights and justice issues and love equipping people to find their place of "holy discontent." - My dream day is up in the Catskill Mountains, hanging out on our property with my husband, Sherret, and three kids, Page, Emerson, and Caden. If you want to connect with me or have questions, call (973) 835-1144 (x12) or by email:

HistoryThe First Reformed Church of Pompton Plains has a rich history. It is many things to different people. It is a church that has served the community for over 275 years and occupies a central place in our historic town. The front door is directly opposite the entrance to the Town Hall across the main thoroughfare of the town, the Newark-Pompton Turnpike. Our sanctuary is exquisite and reflective of colonial days. Its features articulate the integrity and simplicity of Reformed worship. It is a place where people gather daily for private prayer, and weekly for exuberant worship. Our sanctuary is open weekdays at 6:45am.What makes our church most special is the people. We are made up of a wide variety of people who avow a multitude of faith expressions. Although we are all very Christian in theological commitment, we are open to and tolerant of people of all creeds and convictions. We attempt to make it known that Christ came to draw all people into a relationship with God that would bring peace, justice and harmony to our world. We don’t know all the answers to the many theological questions, and don’t attempt to give the impression we do. Rather we try to live so that it may be said of us, as it was of the early Christians: "see how they love one another."Our roots began as a branch of the Reformed Church of Holland. The Original church was built on the banks of the Pequannock River and dedicated on April 7, 1736. The church located on its current site, was built in May 1771. Teunis Dey of Preakness conveyed one Acre of ground, forming the original lot on which the first Church was built and on which the present building now stands. The church served as a mother church to many surrounding communities, that later built their own churches as their membership increased. George Washington attended services here while visiting friends. For more than 60 years, Dutch was the prevalent language used in the church services and up until the Revolutionary War, the church records were kept in Dutch. In 1814, the church was enlarged 16 feet, the steeple was put in the east end, and the walls and windows were raised. There was originally a rental system for pew space. This was abolished on June 26, 1922 upon assurance that the members continue to contribute to the church generously.Tradition informs us that our steeple is one of the four possible spires in the United States of the Christopher Wren Architecture. Many of our forefathers rest in the only cemetery in Pequannock Township which is at the rear of the church. When a fire on October 24th, 1937 destroyed all but the exterior walls. Watch this video of the blaze. The people were determined to promptly undertake the gigantic task of rebuilding our beloved church and to restore its colonial proportions along the same architectural lines as closely as possible. In April 1939, a three day celebration took place to dedicate the rebuilt church to our Lord so future generations could assemble to worship God. See the video below of the bell being raised into the steeple. In 1983 we adopted a church logo for the first time, and the slogan "Share the Spirit." In 1986 we celebrated our 250th anniversary. This year, on April 7, 2011, we marked our 275th Anniversary. Enjoy some of our photos.Rebuilding of the Church in 1938Only one year after the church celebrated its 200th Anniversary, a fire started in the sanctuary and the building was engulfed in flames. Watch this video of the raising of the recast bell.Recently, an article about our church's history written by member Sue Hellyer was published in "Country Magazine." Check it out by cllicking here.

OUR MISSIONThe mission is the primary goal that God has called us to accomplish. It describes what we attempt to do for God and people. It offers a guideline for decision making, focuses on the future, inspires unity, shapes strategy, and enhances our effectiveness. It answers the question ‘what’ are we to do? CONNECT with God and one anotherCELEBRATE through participation and worshipCULTIVATE disciples of Jesus ChristCONTRIBUTE to our community and beyondCORE VALUESCore Values communicate what is most important – what really matters – to a church. They are the very beliefs that the church builds its life, ministry and mission around. Our Core Values will guide what we ‘do’ as a church and how we utilize our assets, specifically staff, volunteers, facility, and finances. In such, our core values will be evident in our behavior and action. The following are our new Core Values. BOLD HOSPITALITYOur church is a welcoming, safe and accepting place for all people. We respect different viewpoints and embrace the spiritual and intellectual journeys of everyone. We welcome all experiences, gifts, challenges and insights, believing that we will be enriched as a community. INTENTIONAL CONNECTIONSWe encourage and support people to be authentic with God and one another, sharing their rough edges and struggles. We believe that people can best experience the rich life God intends for them when they are connected with others: serving and being served, challenging and being challenged, forgiving and being forgiven, teaching and being taught, giving and receiving. TRANSFORMATIONAL FAITH DEVELOPMENTWe embrace the wonder and mystery of all God’s creation, recognizing that it is too profound and complex to be simplified or neatly packed into a box. We value progressive Christian teaching that challenges us to follow Christ and grow in spiritual vibrancy through prayer, the study of Scripture, worship, fellowship, service, and meditation.INSPIRATIONAL WORSHIPWe strive to create an environment for worship that is inspiring, engaging, meaningful, and relevant. We believe in worship that is Biblically-inspired, leading us into a more complete relationship with God. The splendor and span of God’s creativity calls us to be innovative. Therefore, our congregation embraces various art forms and musical styles within our worship as we accept that one style does not fit all. PASSIONATE MISSION AND SERVICEBy discovering our spiritual gifts and passionately using our God-given talents, we seek to have a transformational effect on our local community and beyond. We carry this out by following the example of Jesus Christ through caring, helping, sharing, teaching, serving, and respecting others. Our church culture is one that values innovation and therefore we seek to nurture, develop and unleash the gifts, dreams, and passions of individuals who desire to impact the culture and community.IMAGINEWe exist to advance God’s Kingdom through School acceptance, personal transformation, and service.
